It is eight o’clock Saturday morning; cars pull into the Sunnyside Mall parking lot with eager women behind the wheel. They park, grab gym bags, sneakers and water bottles, and rush to the closest entrance to the mall.
Approaching the door to the gym, the women take a look around to see how many have already arrived. Prior to 8:15 they scan their barcode for entrance to the fitness center, drop children off in the daycare and rush to the change room. Inside the change room is a competition for the closest locker to the door. They throw their bags inside, dress into their workout gear and run to the front desk.
The size of the lineup is dependent on the time of year. January is the busiest time for gym-goers due to New Year’s resolution determination. February and March are slow on Saturday mornings as many women find it hard to get out of bed when the temperatures drop. It picks up again when approaching the summer months.
The staff at the front desk watch the clock until it turns exactly 8:15. They then set the sign-up sheet and marker on the desk. This sign-up sheet provides the women entrance to their favorite class of the week. Individually the women sign their names on the 26 lines that indicate class capacity. Snarls and dirty looks are shared among individuals towards those who sign up for themselves as well as friends who have yet to arrive.
After sign up is a free for all. At this time, there is still 15 minutes until the previous class has finished and they are able to enter the studio. A cluster is formed outside the door to the studio, creating an audience of the women working out inside.
At exactly 8:30 while the women in the previous class stretch, a funnel is formed as the women push their way through the single entrance to the studio. The first few inside have the privilege of setting up their equipment under the fans, the sole purpose for everyone’s hurry. While the remaining women scatter about the room, placing a step in front of them and a set of dumbbells and body bar to the side.
The instructor strolls in ten minutes late and spends another five minutes setting up and discussing today’s routine with newcomers.
After 30 minutes of preparation for the workout plus travel time, the music begins and they begin the warm up part of the work out. All the stress that was caused prior to the class is alleviated during the next 60 minutes of intense cardio and weight training.
After the class the women go their separate ways.
These are the events that occur weekly at Goodlife Fitness in Bedford, NS for the Fit Mix class, and will continue to occur as long as this class and instructor are offered.
